Reading Activities Complying Seven Reading Comprehension Strategies 2

The followings are the reading activities we decided complying 7 reading comprehension strategies to promote the reading and understanding of Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile.

5.   Determing main ideas

Here are some questions in the proposed worksheet to help student determine the main ideas of the book, the Enormous Crocodile.

1. How does the story start? What did the enormous crocodile say to the not so big crocodile?
2. What happens to the crocodile each time he tries to catch a child?
3. How does the story end?
4. Why did the crocodile fail?
5. Do you like the enormous crocodile? Why?

All the questions are set as guide to help students determine the main ideas of the book. And students are required to write about 50 words for each questions.

4.   Making predictions and inferences

Three worksheets are to be set to allow students to make their own meaning of the books and prompt them to be more creative based on the book and related personal experience.

1.Unsolicited Letter of  the Enormous Crocodile 

The enormous crocodile needs money to pay for all the damage he has caused in the story. He wants to earn this by applying for a job. You are going to write a Unsolicited Letter to promote yourself to the proposed employer. Students should think about the personality of the crocodile, what is the special ability, and what kind of work is suitable for the crocodile. Students are asked to write about 100 words.

2.Self promotion poster of the Enormous Crocodile

As the enormous crocodile has done so much damage in the book, he is now very sorry and try very hard to correct himself.  You are asked to design a poster of advertisement to promote the image of the enormous crocodile. 
The followings should be included in the poster. 

A picture of the enormous crocodile should be 
A sentence or slogan .
Make people notice the advertisement .


3. Confessed Crocodile

Imagine you are the enormous crocodile. You have to persuade the elephant not to throw you into space. You have to confess and think up why you behaved like you did and how to make up for the damage you have caused. You could write a letter to the elephant or those you hurt.

The following should be included in the letter.

1. Think of good reasons why you acted so bad.

2. List the ways in which you can fix the damage you caused.

3. Explain how sorry you are and how you won't do any of these terrible things again.

4. Explain how would you change.

Introduction of The Enormous Crocodile

The Enormous crocodile is an English Story book especially for children with colourful and funny illustration. The author is British novelist Roald Dahl. The book was first published in 1978. The picture shown is the version with Quentin Blake illustration.


The story takes place in Africa where an enormous crocodile goes tramping through the jungle telling all the animals he's going to eat children. The animals tell him that it's a horrible thing to do and give him death threats but he tries to use his tricks to eat the tasty children nonetheless. However, every time he tries, the animals of the jungle save the children. Later on, Trunky the elephant kills the crocodile by swinging him around in the air by his tail and letting him go until he flies into the sky and crashes headlong into the Sun.

Reading Activities Complying Seven Reading Comprehension Strategies 1

The followings are the reading activities we decided complying 7 reading comprehension strategies to promote the reading and understanding of Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile.

1.   Activating or building background knowledge

Ask questions and show pictures of animals in order to activate students’ background knowledge of animals. Students may think about the characters of different kinds of animals. For example, lion and tigers are big and fierce and they live in the forest/jungle. Crocodiles are big and live in waterside of the jungle.

Ask the following questions and let students know different kinds of animals.

1.      Have you ever been to the Hong Kong Ocean Park?

2.      What animals can you see in the Ocean Park?

Pandas, dolphins, alligators/crocodiles (similar animals), sealions, seals, fox, monkey

-          Webbed feet

(They have a streamlined body that enables them to swim swiftly. Crocodiles also tuck their feet to their sides while swimming, which make them faster by
decreasing water resistance. They have webbed feet which, although not
used to propel the animal through the water, allow it to make fast turns
and sudden moves in the water or initiate swimming. Webbed feet are an
advantage in shallower water where the animals sometimes move around by
walking. Crocodiles are ambush hunters, waiting for fish or land animals to come
close, and then rushing out to attack.)
